Higashi West was my first sushi experience, six years ago, and it was my best. We went back recently and it was just as good as I remember. Their signature dish, the Higashi West Roll, is a true delight, though my companion did not like the sauce. My second favorite sushi here is the simple maguro nigiri, which simply melts in your mouth.

The decor, especially since they expanded a few years back, is lovely. It's a bit loud though, and the service is often spotty.

There are plenty of good sushi restaurants in the Bay Area, but if money is no object, turn to Higashi West for a splendid meal.

Food: 6 - melt-in-your-mouth nigiri sushi, wide variety of sushi rolls, nice selection of non-sushi appetizers
Ambience: 6 - gorgeous setting, interesting people-watching venue
Service: 3 - hard to get ahold of someone to take your order, somewhat hectic pacing
Overall: 5 - if you're not paying for dinner and you're in the mood for sushi, Higashi West will provide a wonderful meal. With all the sushi restaurants in the area, there are less-costly options without the complex rolls and scenic decor.
